Before we talk about search engine optimization (SEO), do you know how many posts published everyday? Believe it or not only WordPress users alone publish more than 2 million posts every day. So how anybody get your article from this flood of posts. This is where search engine optimization (SEO) comes.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of optimizing your website and its contents so that the search engines display your post at the top of search results for specific keyword. It is the way to be liked by search engines, like Google, without using any paid ads ( known as organic listing).
How search engine optimization works
There are many search engines, including Google, Yahoo, and more. But Google control over _% of the search. So in this post we will focus on Google.
When you search some words in Google, you see a list of results or links which is called SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages).
Let’s say you search “digital marketing in Ethiopia”. Google will bring you 10 results in the first page only.
Some of the results you see are at the top and some of them at the bottom. The other search results are even in the next pages.
Why do you think this difference happened? Do you think Google randomly select some websites and show it to you? NO!
When you search “digital marketing in Ethiopia”,the first website you see is the one who gets high rank by Google for the Keyword “digital marketing in Ethiopia”.
Ever search engine have it’s own methods to rank webpages. But they all focus on displaying websites that have high quality, user-friendly and relevant contents.
And there are easy methods to be number one on Google for selected keywords. I will show you the techniques in the next topics.
The first thing to do inorder to rank number one on Google is knowing keywords that are important to you.
Your website, online business or article can rank number one on Google for different keywords. But selecting the right ones is one of the important steps.
Believe me you don’t want to rank for every keywords on the internet. It’s also difficult and irrelevant for you.
Write down all keywords that are relevant to your focus area. At least 10.
For example, if your business or focus area is on furnitures, your keywords should be like “furniture store in Ethiopia”, “best furniture shop in Ethiopia”, “buy furniture”, and other related keywords.
Then, select the best from them, which are the ones that many people are searching for. Take 2 or 3 keywords as your primary and the rest as secondary (longer) keywords.
Primary keywords are with one or two words, like “furniture” or “furniture shop”. It defines your business in general.
Longer keywords are more specific. It may include your uniqueness, like “furniture shop for office”. Or it may include your location, like “furniture shop in Addis Ababa”.
But to select the best keywords, you need tools and websites. Don’t worry. I got you covered. Here are list of best SEO tools and websites to use.
Tools and websites for search engine optimization
There are free and paid keyword research tools, depends on the features they offer.
Google Keyword Planner
This free tool is part of Google AdWords program. It is helpful to select Keywords that have high traffic. It is also used for advertisment research and PPC (we will see this in other posts).
The Google Keyword Planner lets you to enter keywords and display many related keywords with their search volume.
Try to select keywords that have mid-range search volume. High search number means high competition. Low search number means no one is searching that word. So select the one in the middle.
I use Google Trends tool to get most profitable keywords.
It shows you what is going on and what are popular ideas in your business right now. Isn’t that amazing? You just enter your area of interest and Google Trends displays a list of trending and popular topics that are loved by many peoples at this moment.
This one is my favorite. Ubersuggest have both free and paid service. The free one is enough to start.
Enter a keyword or a url and it displays all information including search volume, related keywords, content ideas, competitor sites, and so much more.
Google Search Console
Google Search Console is a free and very important tool to use.
It analysis your website and tells you which keywords are people using to find your website. It shows you from which country your website get more search volume, at what time, date, from which device (desktop, tablet or mobile phone) and more.
Google Search Console displays the following:
- Total Clicks – total clicks or traffics you get from Google
- Total Impressions – total number of times your website appear on Google search
- Average CTR – the average clickthrough rate, which is just your impressions divided by your clicks (a good average CTR is 10% or more)
- Average Position – the average Google search result position for your articles
Those are some and best tools that I suggest to use for free. But there are also other tools to explore, like Semrush, KWFinder by Mangools and Keywords Everywhere.
